Preserve the relationship between style, size, colour and the physical barcode while classifying active, historical and discontinued products. Check reused identifiers and duplicate descriptions before importing stock. A trial migration should let staff scan representative garments and reconcile quantities by actual variant, including older items still held for sale or customer returns.
Understand the decision
The old catalogue has separate records for successive seasons and some supplier barcodes have been reused in internal spreadsheets. A clean-looking style list may therefore hide multiple physical identities. The review should protect historical sales and current stock while deciding which records should remain available for new purchasing.
Work through the requirements
- Classify seasonal records by intended future use
- Resolve reused or ambiguous barcodes
- Scan physical samples against imported variants
| Record or decision | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Style-variant map | Preserves merchandising and physical identities |
| Barcode exception list | Tracks reused or conflicting references |
| Seasonal stock register | Explains active and older inventory |
What would a passing test show?

Watch for this failure
Merging styles by display name can erase meaningful seasonal or variant differences. Keep physical samples in the validation process and preserve the references needed for returns, even when the merchandising team no longer wants an item in the current catalogue.
Continue the evaluation
