An Odoo retail evaluation should cover the entire store day, including opening, sales, refunds, cash handling, stock effects and closing reconciliation. Test with the intended staff accounts, devices and payment setup. A successful sale alone does not demonstrate that the store is operationally ready.
Define the store model
List the store locations, selling channels, registers and roles involved in a normal day. Identify whether customers need consistent pricing or return handling across channels. Describe when a staff member must ask a manager for approval and how those decisions are recorded.
Odoo's Point of Sale documentation covers daily transactions, returns, refunds and register closing. Treat those as starting points for evaluation, then verify how the selected version, applications and configuration meet your particular operating rules.
Prepare products and policies together
A retail catalogue includes more than item names and prices. Confirm product identifiers, variants, barcodes, tax configuration, packaging and whether an item should be available in each channel. Assign an owner for changes so a promotion or product correction does not create contradictory information.
Bring real policy examples to the demonstration: a refund after a promotion, a damaged item, a missing receipt and a request to change a selling price. Decide the authorized response before expecting configuration to enforce it. Validate tax-related requirements with the responsible finance adviser.
Verify the exact device and payment arrangement
Odoo documents support for several categories of retail hardware, but that does not establish compatibility for every model, payment provider or region. List exact devices and connection methods, then test the intended setup together. Include printing, scanning, drawer operation and the payment flow where applicable.
Do not assume that temporary network resilience means every connected service continues working. Document what staff can do during an interruption, what must wait and how recovery is checked. The payment provider's behaviour needs its own verification.
An illustrative acceptance test
Open a test register with an agreed starting cash amount. Process a cash sale, a card sale and a permitted discount using ordinary staff accounts. Complete a refund under the store's policy, then close the session and compare the expected cash and payment totals with the actual records.
The test passes when receipts, returns, stock effects and payment totals reconcile, while an unauthorized staff member cannot perform restricted actions. Repeat a correction scenario so the closing process explains a discrepancy instead of concealing it.
Roll out around operational readiness
Train managers in exceptions and reconciliation before the first busy trading period. Give staff short job aids for common tasks and a clear escalation contact. A store should know what to do if an order is duplicated, a payment appears uncertain or a product scans incorrectly.
Common pitfalls include testing on a laptop while the store uses different hardware, checking only happy-path transactions and leaving opening balances until launch day. Pilot a representative store workflow and preserve an agreed contingency procedure before expanding.

Can existing retail hardware be reused?+
Possibly, but compatibility must be checked for each model, connection method and operating environment. Request an end-to-end test using the actual devices and payment arrangement before deciding.
What should store managers approve before launch?+
Managers should approve permissions, sales and return scenarios, device operation, daily reconciliation, staff readiness and the disruption procedure. Document the evidence and any accepted limitations.
