Treat a proposed regrind addition as a specification and traceability decision before consuming material. Identify the source, allowed proportion, customer restrictions and required approval or trial. The production record should distinguish the intended mix from actual consumption, and the resulting output should retain its review status until the agreed acceptance conditions are met.
Understand the decision
In a sample shortage, production has insufficient virgin resin for the remaining order and proposes using recovered material from an earlier run. The recovered material appears similar, but its source and colour history are incomplete. An urgent delivery date does not answer whether the proposed blend is acceptable.
Work through the requirements
- Identify the recovered material and its known history.
- Obtain the required specification decision.
- Record the approved mix and actual quantities consumed.
| Record or decision | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Substitution request | Describe material and proposed proportion. |
| Material source | Preserve known lot and recovery history. |
| Acceptance result | Document the agreed trial or inspection. |
What would a passing test show?

Watch for this failure
Treating all recovered material as a generic low-cost ingredient can hide customer restrictions and inconsistent inputs. The system design should preserve approval evidence without presenting the software itself as proof that a proposed material blend is suitable.
