Prepare an Odoo upgrade by inventorying the current deployment, checking custom-module compatibility, upgrading a test database, and validating critical workflows before production cutover. Assign owners to data reconciliation, integrations, training, and launch decisions.
Know what kind of change you are making
A version upgrade is different from an edition change, a hosting move, or a migration from another ERP. Combining them can increase dependencies and make failures harder to isolate. Identify each change explicitly and decide whether a staged approach is appropriate.
List the current version, hosting, installed applications, custom modules, third-party modules, reports, automated actions, and integrations. Give each item a business owner and a technical owner. Check target-version compatibility before scheduling the production change.
Build the test plan from business risk
Choose scenarios that would materially interrupt the business if they failed. Include order fulfilment, invoicing, payment reconciliation, stock movements, manufacturing or service delivery where used, and the reports needed to run the business. Verify each scenario with the relevant user role.
Odoo recommends testing an upgraded database before production. For a customized database, the custom modules need a compatible version. Treat database conversion as one workstream alongside code changes, acceptance testing, and the operational preparation required to adopt the new release.
Review the upgrade's real scope
- Data: reconcile important totals and inspect representative records.
- Workflows: validate both routine transactions and exceptions.
- Permissions: check restricted roles as well as administrators.
- Integrations: confirm data flow, failure handling, and reconciliation.
- Documents: inspect invoices, labels, templates, and business reports.
- Users: prepare short guidance for changed workflows and screens.
- Operations: confirm the cutover window, responsibilities, and support coverage.
Approve production with explicit evidence
Record the outstanding issues, business impact, acceptance owner, and decision for each item. Set a cutover decision point before the planned window. Confirm the platform-specific backup and recovery process instead of assuming that every hosting option has the same reversal behaviour.
Odoo's Enterprise upgrade coverage has boundaries. Review the current agreement for custom modules and distinguish the vendor's technical upgrade service from data cleanup, testing, training, and project coordination. Budget for the work your team or implementation provider still needs to perform.
Example: test a business day across the upgrade
Choose a representative order that includes the details most likely to expose a problem: a particular price rule, a backorder, a tracked product, or an external payment reference. Run it through the current test environment and preserve the expected outputs. Then run the equivalent scenario after the upgrade and explain any differences.
Some differences may be intended improvements, while others may require configuration or code changes. Have the process owner approve that distinction. Repeat for a restricted user account and review the downstream report. This turns a vague confirmation that the system opens successfully into evidence that an important business process still works.
Schedule a short review after the first full operating cycle. Confirm that recurring jobs, business reports, and less frequent transactions have worked as expected before closing the project.

Does an included Odoo upgrade cover all project work?+
Not necessarily. Review the current agreement and module coverage. Data cleanup, third-party customization work, training, testing, and coordination may require separate effort.
Can we upgrade before custom modules are ready?+
Odoo's documentation states that custom modules must be available for the target version before upgrading a database that uses them. Confirm compatibility and test the complete deployment first.
