For a small or midsize ERP evaluation, name Business Central as the comparison when that is the actual Microsoft proposal. Compare its workflow and ecosystem fit with a specific Odoo edition and hosting plan, including every extension you depend on.
Clarify which Dynamics product is proposed
Dynamics 365 is a family of products. Business Central should not be treated as interchangeable with Finance, Supply Chain Management or Project Operations. Ask the supplier to name the products and licenses in the solution.
Microsoft describes Business Central as ERP for small and midsize businesses with finance, project and supply-chain capabilities and Microsoft 365 connections. These are useful evaluation areas; existing use of Outlook or Excel alone does not settle the ERP decision.
Test the Microsoft connections your team would use
List the actual handoffs involving Excel, Outlook, Teams, reporting and identity administration. In the demonstration, have the relevant user complete the task and show where the authoritative record is held.
For Odoo, identify which tools would remain outside the platform and what would connect them. Compare the maintenance and ownership of those connections with the proposed Microsoft setup, rather than scoring vendors by ecosystem names.
Follow a shared operational scenario
| Scenario | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Order with a stock shortfall | Purchasing, reservations, partial deliveries and invoice traceability. |
| Project with recorded time | Approval, the billing basis and the link between project costs and financial reports. |
| Return or invoice correction | Permissions, audit history and the effect on reports. |
| A required extension | Who supplies it, the supported version and the acceptance test after upgrades. |
Make licensing and extension assumptions visible
Write down user roles, full-access and limited-access needs, companies and environments. Ask for a quote for that exact setup. List separate applications and extensions rather than assuming they are included in a base subscription.
For Odoo, confirm edition, hosting and any requirement for external API access or custom modules. For Business Central, confirm the proposed license and extensions. A current written proposal is more useful than a copied monthly price.
Plan the migration and the new reporting process
Map customers, suppliers, products, opening balances and open transactions. Agree which reports must match at cutover and which reports intentionally change because the operating process changes.
Have users practise normal work and corrections in each candidate system. Include the administrator who will manage permissions and the accounting lead who will sign off reconciliation.
Compare the project cost, then the operating cost
Request quotes for the same users, locations, workflows and planning period. Separate subscriptions and hosting from discovery, configuration, migration, integrations, user practice and support. Include renewal terms, upgrade work and the staff time needed to run the project.
Use CAD consistently. If a supplier quotes another currency, record the exchange-rate assumption and which costs can change. Compare the first year separately from a normal operating year; a low subscription price can still accompany an expensive implementation.
Choose based on fit and ownership
Business Central can be a candidate when its demonstrated workflows and Microsoft connections match the team’s requirements. Odoo can be a candidate when its proposed applications and operating model fit the required process. Neither result removes the need for clear scope and capable delivery.
Record failed tests and dependencies alongside strengths. Agree who owns extensions, upgrades and support before treating the demonstration as a complete proposal.

Are all Dynamics 365 products Business Central?+
No. Ask for the exact products and licenses. This guide focuses on Business Central; another Dynamics proposal requires its own comparison.
Does using Microsoft 365 mean we should choose Business Central?+
It makes Microsoft integration worth testing. Choose from the demonstrated workflows, administration, support and complete cost rather than the existing email platform alone.
Which system is cheaper?+
Compare written proposals for the same users, scope and period, including extensions, hosting, implementation and ongoing maintenance.
