THE DIRECT ANSWER

Define a minimum useful remnant and record its grade, thickness, dimensions and location separately from scrap. Decide when an operator creates the remnant record and how later jobs reserve it. Reconcile the original sheet against finished pieces, reusable remainder and loss using the same agreed unit basis.

Understand the decision

A sample laser-cutting job uses part of a stainless sheet and leaves a rectangular remainder large enough for another order. A different irregular offcut has little practical value. Treating both as ordinary stock would make the planning screen appear more useful than the material actually available.

Work through the requirements

  1. Agree reuse criteria with the cutting supervisor.
  2. Measure and identify the retained piece.
  3. Reconcile the sheet consumption after cutting.

Watch for this failure

A positive stock balance does not prove a usable shape exists. Avoid converting every offcut into a generic weight balance when estimators need dimensions; that loses the physical constraint driving the next cutting decision.
