THE SHORT ANSWER

Sage is a product family, not one ERP. Identify your current product, edition, extensions and workflow gaps first. Compare improving that setup with a specific Odoo proposal using the same records and reports.

Name the Sage product before comparing features

Sage 50 Canada combines desktop accounting with connected services and add-ons. Sage 300 is a different product, and Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate is a separate construction-focused offering. A claim that “Sage cannot handle operations” is too broad to support a decision.

Record the version, deployment, licensed modules, payroll arrangement and partner extensions in your current setup. Ask the team which existing features it relies on and which work happens outside the system.

Compare a workflow that currently crosses systems

For a distributor, follow a customer order, purchase, partial receipt, delivery, invoice and return. For a service business, follow approved work and time through billing. Give the same records to the Sage and Odoo suppliers.

DecisionEvidence to request
Keep or replaceA demonstrated improvement to the current Sage setup alongside the Odoo proposal.
ReportingThe same financial and operational reports, with transactions traced back to source records.
ExtensionsA list of modules and connectors, their maintainer and upgrade responsibilities.
Daily administrationPermissions, corrections, bank reconciliation and support escalation demonstrated by users.

Protect the records your accountant already trusts

Agree the opening balances, outstanding receivables and payables, current stock and open orders to migrate. Decide whether historical transactions will remain in a retained Sage archive or move under a separate scope.

Reconcile a test migration to signed-off source totals. Include customer and supplier credits, foreign-currency balances and inventory valuation where applicable. An export that imports without errors is not yet a reconciled migration.

Evaluate the cost of staying as well as leaving

Include upgrades or extensions needed in the current Sage system, current support arrangements and staff workarounds. For a move, include export work, data cleanup, report recreation, user practice and temporary access to the old system.

Ask who maintains custom reports and connectors after an upgrade in either option. Familiarity has value, but it should be weighed against a documented operational gap.

Compare the project cost, then the operating cost

Request quotes for the same users, locations, workflows and planning period. Separate subscriptions and hosting from discovery, configuration, migration, integrations, user practice and support. Include renewal terms, upgrade work and the staff time needed to run the project.

Use CAD consistently. If a supplier quotes another currency, record the exchange-rate assumption and which costs can change. Compare the first year separately from a normal operating year; a low subscription price can still accompany an expensive implementation.

Make the decision from the evidence

Keeping Sage can be appropriate when the required work is supported and a manageable improvement addresses the gap. Odoo can be a candidate when the proposed connected workflow passes your tests and the team can manage the transition.

Write down the accepted reports, migration totals, retained systems and remaining exceptions. These should become scope and launch criteria rather than informal assurances from a sales discussion.

Common questions

Does Sage mean Sage 50?+

No. Identify the specific Sage product and edition. Sage 50, Sage 300 and Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate have different purposes and configurations.

Can we keep historical Sage data?+

Plan an accessible archive and the permissions, software access and retention arrangements needed to use it. Confirm these before ending the old subscription or support arrangement.

Does Odoo replace Canadian payroll automatically?+

Do not assume that. Name the payroll provider, required exchanges and accounting entries in the scope and demonstrate them.
