THE SHORT ANSWER

Odoo is a suite of business applications covering areas such as CRM, sales, accounting, inventory, eCommerce and project management. The useful question is which workflows your business needs to connect. Your edition, installed applications, hosting and configuration determine the functions available in your system; the product name alone does not establish fit.

What does Odoo actually do?

Odoo brings several business applications into one software environment. Its official documentation describes the applications and the settings needed to use them. A specific workflow still needs to be demonstrated in your chosen configuration.

For example, Odoo 19 documentation explains how an opportunity in CRM can become a quotation when the Sales application is installed. That is a documented handoff. It does not prove that every approval, customer rule or external integration your business needs is already configured.

  • Name the process owner and the records involved.
  • Demonstrate an ordinary transaction and a realistic exception.
  • Record the application, permissions and settings used in the demonstration.

Is Odoo an ERP, a CRM, or both?

CRM focuses on sales relationships and opportunities. ERP is the broader business-system category used to connect operational and financial processes. Odoo includes a CRM application alongside applications for other areas of a business.

Decide what you want to improve before selecting applications. A team with a sales-follow-up problem may have a different first release from a distributor reviewing purchasing, stock and invoicing.

Start with the business question
Business questionEvidence to bring
Sales follow-upA sample opportunity, its next action and the quotation handoff.
Stock and purchasingA purchase order, receipt, return and stock adjustment from your current process.
Projects and billingA project, sample time entries and the invoice review process.
Accounting setupA sample transaction, tax requirements and the reconciliation your accounting owner accepts.

Is Odoo free? Community and Enterprise

Odoo’s administration documentation identifies Community as the free, open-source edition under LGPLv3 and Enterprise as an edition with additional functionality and services. Edition and subscription terms must be checked against your requirements.

A free software licence does not mean a business rollout has no cost. Budget separately for configuration, data preparation, training, integrations, hosting, maintenance and responsibility for recovery. Use current quotes rather than treating an online example as your price.

Which hosting arrangement should you consider?

Review hosting together with customization, maintenance and access responsibilities. Odoo’s documentation describes Online, Odoo.sh and on-premise arrangements.

For Odoo Online, version 19 documentation states that custom modules and modules from the Odoo Apps Store are incompatible. If your requirements depend on a particular module or integration, check the supported arrangement before choosing hosting.

  • Identify who manages backups and tests recovery.
  • Agree access permissions, updates and support ownership.
  • Verify the chosen version and hosting constraints for each dependency.

How should a Canadian business evaluate Odoo?

Bring your current systems, legal entities, operating locations and first-release priorities to a business needs review. Have the responsible advisers validate tax, payroll, privacy and other obligations that apply to your business. A software demonstration alone does not establish compliance.

AltaCom offers business needs reviews, Odoo implementation and user adoption training across Canada through PlanMyERP. We use the discussion to define the workflows, evidence and next decisions; a final scope and any paid work are agreed separately.

  • Choose one high-value workflow to demonstrate.
  • Define a result your process owner can accept.
  • Include data migration and user practice in the plan.
  • List unresolved gaps before agreeing the implementation scope.

Common questions

What is Odoo used for?+

Odoo provides business applications for areas including CRM, sales, accounting, inventory and projects. Choose the applications and configuration around the workflows your team needs to complete, then verify those workflows with sample records.

Is Odoo suitable for a small business?+

Fit depends on the processes you need, the people who will use it, the configuration work and the cost of running it. Start with a small, agreed workflow and compare its result with your current tools. Company size alone cannot establish fit.

Can Odoo replace QuickBooks or another accounting tool?+

Treat that as an accounting and migration decision. Compare required workflows, opening balances, tax scenarios, reporting and reconciliation with your accounting owner. Do not switch systems until the replacement process and migration have been accepted.

Does an Odoo licence include an implementation?+

Separate software subscription terms from the project services you need. Ask what configuration, migration, integration, testing, training and ongoing support your quotes include. Confirm the current supplier terms before purchasing.
