Transfer an approved structural specification and revision reference rather than every design save. Define ownership of dimensions, substrate, die and expected blank yield. Compare revised requirements with material already committed, and provide an exception review when a design export introduces an unknown code or changes a released job.
Understand the decision
A hypothetical design tool exports a revised tray after a customer changes how units stack. The new layout alters the number of blanks per sheet. Purchasing has already ordered material against the earlier assumption, so the interface must reveal the difference instead of silently recalculating demand.
Work through the requirements
- Map structural and material fields explicitly.
- Approve yield assumptions before operational release.
- Review revisions against purchased and issued material.
| Record or decision | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Design manifest | Identify the approved structural revision. |
| Yield basis | Explain blanks per source unit. |
| Import exception | Expose unmapped or changed requirements. |
What would a passing test show?

Watch for this failure
Automating a design calculation does not establish that its assumptions fit the production process. Preserve the yield basis and approval, especially where machine margins, tooling layout or usable material dimensions differ from the designer’s defaults.
